With the invention of cars came the problem of where to park them. Especially in cities, you’d be hard pressed to find parking. And when you do, you’re likely to get blocked by double or even triple parking. It is a problem that isn’t new, and people have come up with some pretty great parking spots. Here are 3 incredible parking spots around the world.

1.    Hamilton Scotts Residences, Singapore

In major cities around the world, space has always been a problem. Time after time, you’ll find yourself cursing the city, and other people for a lack of accessible, easy parking. Whether you’re at the office, heading to a mall, or just heading home, good parking is a treasure that hides itself every day.  It’s tiring to spend an hour looking for parking outside, but it’s even more stressful to have to fight for parking where you live.

After a long day in the office, you’d want to get into your bed as quick as possible. Instead, all you do is spend time waiting for a spot, which is unlikely as other people are probably parking their car for the night. The problem is worse in countries like ours, where land is limited. So what do you do?

Looking down on the commoners with your sky garage.

Well if you’re filthy rich, all you have to do is buy a condo with your very own parking lot. We don’t mean a shared parking lot like those commoners. At the Hamilton Scotts recidences in Singapore, you can actually park your Ferraris and Lambos in your living room. All you have to do is drive your car into a biometrically controlled lift, which will bring it to your apartment floor.

You can take the normal human lift, and soon, you’ll see your car coming in nicely parked in your view. You have a guaranteed parking spot, and you get to watch over your beauties as well. How much for all this? You can rent it at a reasonable SGD 13,000 to SGD 14,0000 a month, or buy a lot for around SGD 10,000,000. There are similar concepts around the world, such as in Chelsea, New York with price tags to match your exquisite need for a great parking spot.

2.    The Green Way Self Park, Chicago

Have you ever wanted to park your car and save Mother Nature at the same time? Now you can. Located in the Windy City, it makes use of the city’s wind to power up the building. Calling itself Chicago’s first earth friendly parking garage, it can be found on the northeast corner of Clark and Kinzie Streets of Chicago.

The parking garage boasts energy-generating wind turbines, a green roof and rainwater cisterns for irrigation, high-efficiency glass and energy efficient lighting. It does live up to its name as an earth friendly parking garage. More than that, the garage uses the electricity collected from the turbines for electric car charging stations. If you drive an electric car, you not only get to park your car in a well-built parking garage, but you get to charge your car as well, ready for you to drive when you get back.

3.    The Volkswagen Autostadt, Germany

Where do you put hundreds of new cars in a single location? Adjacent to the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, there is a visitor attraction focusing on automobiles. It features a museum, feature pavilions for the principal automobile brands in the Volkswagen Group, a customer centre where customers can pick up new cars, and take a tour through the enormous factory, a guide to the evolution of roads, and cinema in a large sphere. It is designed by more than 400 architects and attracts around 2 million visitors every year.

What does all this have to do with incredible parking spots? Do you remember that thrilling Mission Impossible 4 scene where they were fighting in a parking silo? That scene was inspired by Volkswagen’s very own glass car silos in Autostadt. The two 60m tall glass silos, also known as AutoTürme, are used as storage for new Volkswagens before collection by the customer. When new cars arrive, they are carried up at a speed of 1.5m per second to an empty lot, ready for a buyer to collect.

When a buyer decides to collect his or her car, the Autostadt supplies the customer with free entrance, meal tickets and a variety of events. When the customer reaches the collection point, he or she can follow on screen as the automatic elevator picks up the selected car in one of the silos. The car is then transported out to the customer without having driven a single meter at all.

Maybe one day, we’ll have an epic parking garage or parking lot we can call our own. One where we'll be able to stop seeing double parks and all forms of illegal parking. Until then, we’ll just have to be irresponsible parkers.
